President Pranab Mukherjee today condoled the loss of lives due to floods in certain areas of Meghalaya and Assam.
In individual messages sent to Dr. K.K. Paul, Governor of Meghalaya and Janaki Ballav Patnaik, Governor of Assam, the President said "I am deeply saddened to learn about the heavy rains leading to floods and landslides in certain areas of the State, which have caused loss of lives, injuries and damage to property. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway."
"I call upon the state government and other authorities to provide all possible aid to the bereaved families, who have lost their near and dear ones as well as medical assistance to the injured," he added.
"Please convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish speedy recovery to the injured persons," the President concluded.
There is a marginal improvement in the flood situation today in lower Assam districts, and the water level has also receded in the worst hit areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts.
According to sources, the death toll in the state has gone up to 33 and over eight lakh people have been affected badly by the floods.
Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, with the recovery of thirteen bodies from various parts of flood-hit Garo Hills region yesterday, the death toll has gone up to 38.
