Princess Diana's "most ornate and romantic" ball gown has gone under the hammer for 85,000 pounds at an auction in London.

Kerry Taylor, a fashion auctioneer, told ABC News that the shimmery frock, which was designed by the Princess of Wales' wedding dress designers - David and Elizabeth Emanuel, is going to be loved and looked after by an overseas museum, who bought it.

Taylor said that the museum was competing with an anonymous phone bidder from the US before finally claiming the dress.

The dress, which has gold sequins, crystals and pearl beads, was paired up with a matching headband, optional sleeve panels and petticoat.

Taylor had previously explained that the ball gown has a "pretty, fairy-tale princess feel to it" and "fitted Diana perfectly".

The dress, which the late princess saw at a Red Cross benefit fashion show in 1986, was worn by her on many occasions.
