Proteas' new Test captain Amla vows to focus more on team instead of own performance

Newly appointed South Africa Test captain Hashim Amla has revealed that it is time for him to take responsibility for the complete team instead of focusing solely on his own performance.

Amla said that throughout the years he has tried to concentrate on his batting, but now as captain he does feel that it is time for him to contribute in a team environment.

While paying tribute to his predecessor, Graeme Smith, Amla said that it was only after the former skipper retired that he actually thought about stepping forward as captain if the team wanted him, given the group of players South Africa has, Sport24 reported.

Amla added that with all the experience that he has gained, not forgetting the senior players South Africa has and because it is always a collective effort, he hopes to do well.

However, the new skipper said that it is difficult to say what kind of captain he would be, adding that he would certainly be picking people's brains, as when one is in a leadership position he is more a servant than a leader.

Amla has been chosen as the best candidate to succeed Smith, who announced his retirement in the middle of the third Test against Australia in March, by Cricket South Africa (CSA), the report added.
