Protests have erupted in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province over residents being deprived of electricity for at least 14 hours a day.

A massive power outage occurred late on Monday night, Geo TV reported.

Residents of Nowshera, Mardan and Peshawar, besides other cities came out on the roads to protest over the "distressing" situation.

They walked through various areas and gathered on the Peshawar-Nowshera road.

Residents also set tyres ablaze and blocked roads.

An incident of stone-pelting injured a police officer.

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) said overloading and illegal connections were responsible for the power outage.
