Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly said that in order to ensure its security, Russia is developing new weapons but without spending large amounts of money like the west.

As the nation faces recession under a combined blow of Western sanctions over Ukraine and slumping prices for oil, Putin announced Russia's military modernisation plans but added that they should be "realistic" and should take into account the current economic situation, reported News 24.

After visiting a shooting range outside Moscow on Tuesday, Putin said that some of the weapons that he saw looked they came straight out of a science fiction movie.

Without naming any country, he warned that the nation could respond to any military threat without spending as much on defence as others.
