Qantas is cutting 5000 jobs from its 32,000-strong workforce.

The announcement came after the Australia carrier posted 252 million dollars in losses in six months.

According to news.com.au, Qantas, battling record fuel costs and fierce competition from rivals, is working to slash costs by two billion dollars over three years.

Nearly 1500 employees will be axed from the management and non-operational positions are expected to come from Qantas' Mascot headquarters, and also Jetstar's Melbourne base.

The location of other job cuts is expected to be made clear in the coming days.
