A teenage boy accused of beating a man in Melbourne was part of a gang that targeted people of Indian appearance.
A children's court heard that the 17-year-old boy was arrested on New Year's Eve after an attack on Manrajwinder Singh last Sunday, that left the 20-year-old with serious head injuries.
Singh remains in an induced coma, as doctors wait to assess the extent of his injuries following the attack, as he and two friends waited for a train.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, one of Singh's friends was also attacked when they were approached by a gang of eight youths, while another friend escaped to raise the alarm.
Three teens have been arrested over the attack, but the other five are wanted for questioning.

A detective told the court the boy was part of a gang known as KYR, which targeted vulnerable people, particularly people of Indian appearance.
The detective said Singh was kicked to the head from an elevated position and then kneed, and was beaten while he lay on the ground unconscious.
The boy was remanded to return to court later this month.
