Launching the Delhi Government's land ownership rights scheme to 2, 50,000 families in 45 resettlement colonies, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that untiring labour and hard work by slum dwellers has resulted in the development of the national capital and its infrastructure.

Gandhi further said that people who avail urban facilities have a responsibility to help slum dwellers.

He said the urban population is growing at a faster rate and is expected to reach 50 to 55 percent during the next 15 years from the current 15 percent.

The residents of the colonies have been demanding ownership rights of their houses for many years.

The colonies came up during 1970s to accommodate families dislocated either due to removal or demolition of slum clusters.
