Section-144 has been imposed and five people have been arrested following clashes in the district's Gangapur city, informed police on Monday while stating that the situation has been brought under control.
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), prohibits an assembly of more than four persons in an area.
"A rally had been organised on the foundation day of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Gangapur city on Sunday. While the rally was crossing a religious place belonging to another community, some miscreants started pelting stones on the rally which led to clashes between the two groups. The VHP leaders started a sit-in protest demanding the arrest of the miscreants. We have arrested five accused on charges of disrupting peace and more people will be arrested after probe. The situation is under control now," Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Tripathi told ANI on Monday.
He also informed that additional forces have been deployed in the area and Section 144 (prohibiting an assembly of more than four people in an area) has been imposed in the Gangapur city to keep the situation under control.
District Collector, Satyapal Singh termed the clashes "unfortunate" and added that the law will punish the guilty.
"Whatever happened in the city is very unfortunate; we are trying to ensure that the situation goes back to normal soon. The law will take its course and punish the guilty, the police have already arrested five people in the matter and more perpetrators will be taken to task soon," Singh told ANI here.
