Tamil Nadu Minister for Fisheries, D Jayakumar on Tuesday accused actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth of politicising Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi's death.
Jayakumar called Rajinikanth immature and said, "Rajinikanth's remark shows his political immaturity. He used Kalaignar's death for political purposes, does not know the history of Tamil Nadu politics."
Jayakumar's reaction came a day after Rajinikanth criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy and his cabinet for not attending late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's funeral last week.
"Many leaders, ranging from state Governor Banwarilal Purohit to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, were present during the burial of Karunanidhi at the Marina. For his burial, the whole of India came. State honours were given by members of the three armed forces. He was given a 21-gun salute. But one thing remains. Tamil Nadu's first citizen, the Chief Minister, shouldn't he have come? Should not the entire cabinet have come?," said Rajinikanth while addressing a memorial event organised by the South Indian Artistes Association for Karunanidhi
"Karunanidhi had passed the DMK through various victories, defeats, and betrayals. If leaders from across the world used to visit Tamil Nadu, they would definitely meet Karunanidhi. I do not know who they will meet hereafter," he added.
Karunanidhi was buried on August 8 beside former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai, in the presence of several high-profile politicians.
He breathed his last on August 7 in Chennai's Kauvery Hospital after a prolonged illness.
