Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday announced that he will increase the import duty on sugar to 40 percent from the current 15 percent.
Certain changes were agreed upon regarding the price and duty on sugar at the meeting, keeping in mind the interest of the farmers.
Paswan told the media, "The government will provide additional interest-free loan of 4,400 crore to cash-strapped sugar mills to make payments to sugarcane farmers."
"It will also extend sugar export subsidy of Rs 3,300 per tones till September this year," he added.
He also said that the government has decided to raise the mandatory blending of ethanol in gasoline to 10 percent from 5 percent.
