A real life castaway, who was left adrift for 13 months in Pacific, has returned to his family, who thought he was dead, in El Salvador.

When Jose Salvador Alvarenga arrived on his native land, he was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation, CBS News reported.

After the 37-year-old fisherman was discharged, he was welcomed by the media and his family in his home village of Garita Palmera.

While his aunt, Emma Alvarenga, wanted to give him a hug, his father, Jose Ricardo Orellana, said that sea was his son's thing.

Jose's mum Maria Julia Alvarenga said that her son always had unusual strength and resilience and his teenage daughter, Fatima, made an archway of palms for the front door of the family home and a sign that said "Welcome".
