World-famous Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe died at Sant Pau hospital in Barcelona at the age of 85, local media reported on Saturday citing the hospital.

According to the Europa Press news agency, the memorial service will be held in Barcelona on Sunday while the funeral will take place on Monday.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences over the diva's death.

"Sad news. A great ambassador of our country, an internationally acclaimed opera soprano, has died. Montserrat Caballe, her voice and her sweetness will stay with us forever," Sanchez said via his official Twitter handle.

President of the Catalan government Quim Torra said that the death of the famous Catalan singer and one the most significant voices of the 20th century was a hard blow.

"She received awards and was honoured in her lifetime, but she also deserves to be honored after her death and she will be," Torra said via his official Twitter feed.

In September, media reported citing sources close to Caballe that she was having problems with her bladder and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the Catalan capital.

In 2012, Caballe gave several performances around the world despite the fact that she had suffered a ministroke.
