Residents plan to grow trees after heavy Assam rain claims lives of hundreds of birds

With hundreds of birds killed in the in the heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm that lashed in Assam's Majuli district, residents are now of the view that more trees need to be planted to provide shelter and protect the birds.

This incident is the first where a large number of birds have been killed in heavy rain near Garamur in Majuli district.

A resident said he was very sad to see that hundred birds lost their lives in the storm.

"In Garamur birds colony we have seen that thousands of birds are living together in two to three trees and its difficult for them stay together in these trees. So, the solution is to plant more trees to provide them shelter and protect them from storms and heavy rain," he added.

 

Meanwhile, another resident in Majuli also said that there were dead birds in his colony.

As many as different species of birds, including Stork, Cattle egret , Pond heron, crows among others, were killed.

These birds, which depend on the horticulture crops in the vicinity, roost on the coconut trees in the surrounding.
