Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has posted an open letter explaining why the band faked their Super Bowl performance.

Flea wrote in the letter that it was made clear to them in the beginning that only the vocals of singer Anthony Kiedis would be live but the bass, drums, and guitar would be pre-recorded, the Verge reported.

Flea claimed that there was no room for argument on this as the NFL was unwilling to risk any unexpected sound problems during the segment.

He said that the band takes their music playing very seriously as it is a sacred thing for them and they always play from their heart, improvising spontaneously, taking musical risks, and sweat blood at every show.

However, Flea added that realizing that the Super Bowl halftime show was a surreal-like, once in a life time crazy thing to do, the band decided to make one exception.

He said that they thought that with Kiedis singing live, they could still bring the spirit and freedom.
