The United States senate on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of Richard Rahul Verma as the next ambassador of that country to India. Verma will be the first Indian-American to be named ambassador.
According to reports, Verma, whose nomination was confirmed by a voice vote on the senate floor, is expected to be sworn in shortly. He is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to India in January next year.
Verma reportedly played an important role in the Congressional passage of Civil Nuclear Deal between India and the US. He has previously served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department from 2009 to 2011.
