Legendary West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards has backed Jason Holder's elevation to the Test captaincy, saying that the all-rounder has the ability to lead the team at this young age.

The 23-year-old, who is also leading the one-day international side, became West Indies' second youngest Test captain when he was given charge of the side for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Richards insisted that it was better to start commanding the team at this young age, adding that Holder would have a longer period at the helm if he becomes successful as captain.

"I believe this individual does have the ability," Richards was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"When you look and see what's around him, when you look and see how he would have gone about his business as a batsman, you can see there is some improvement... but certainly the signs are there and I think maybe it's not a bad choice," Richards added.

Earlier this year, Holder proved his batting prowess by smashing a resilient hundred to help his side draw a Test against England in Antigua and an attacking 92 against Australia in Jamaica.

West Indies will tour Sri Lanka where they will play two Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is in October and November.
