Former West Indies skipper Vivian Richards has lavished praise on retiring New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, describing him as one of the finest ambassadors of cricket.

Richards's praise came after the 34-year-old recorded the fastest Test century during his side's second Test against Australia.

McCullum took just 54 balls to reach the three-figure landmark, surpassing Richards and Pakistan's Misbah-ul-haq's record of 56 balls.

Richards, who is currently mentoring Quetta in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL), also congratulated McCullum for reaching the milestone and for making the game of cricket beautiful, Sport24 reported.

The batting legend, who set the record against England in 1986, admitted that McCullum was a batsman whom he would have wanted to surpass his milestone.

McCullum, who is playing his 101st and the farewell match, was dismissed for 145 in the first innings.

New Zealand are currently trailing 1-0 in the two-match Test series following an innings and 52-run defeat in the opening match in Wellington.
