Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju will preside over a function to mark the second NIA Day celebration here tomorrow.
On the occasion, eminent editor, columnist and author Shekhar Gupta will deliver the second R.V. Raju Memorial Lecture on the topic "Pakistan and Neighborhood: A Hawkish agenda".
The first NIA Day was celebrated on completion of five years of the agency's existence, on January 20, 2014.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was set up by the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, which was enacted as India's law enforcement response to terrorism in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
Late Shri R. V. Raju took over as the first Director General of the NIA on January 19, 2009.
The NIA is empowered under the NIA Act, 2008, to investigate a variety of offences. NIA is assigned cases for investigation by the Ministry of Home Affairs, either on the basis of a report from the State Government, or suo motu, which are grave enough to be investigated by the Agency. Besides Headquarters, NIA today has six branches, in Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Kolkata.
So far 92 cases have been assigned to the NIA for investigations. These are among the most complex, high profile cases. Of the cases investigated till date, many cases have entered the trial phase, of which in twelve, trial has been completely or partially finalised and judgements delivered. NIA has secured conviction in ten cases.
