At least six people were killed and four injured on Monday evening, when a speeding vehicle hit them in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich District.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sunil Singh said villagers had gathered to see off a marriage procession in Bahraich District when the mishap took place.
"Villagers, including some women, had gathered near a road to see off the marriage procession. The crowd was hit by the speeding uncontrolled vehicle," Singh said.
The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
"So far, six people have died and four are injured, who have been admitted in the hospital. Their treatment is going on. The driver and vehicle have been taken into custody. Action is being taken against him as per law," said Singh.
Road accidents are common in India, where roads are often of poor quality. Transport officials attribute a large number of accidents in India to reckless driving and untrained drivers.
