In an iconic moment, a statement made by Hollywood actor Robert De Niro earned him a standing ovation at the recently held 72nd edition of annual Tony Awards.

The Oscar-winning actor of 'Raging Bull' fame said, "I just want to say one thing - F**k Trump. It's no longer down with Trump. It's f**k Trump" while pumping his fist in the air.

The bold statement has left Twittereople in frenzy.

A user posted, "If any Republican Congressman criticizes Robert De Niro tomorrow for what he said about Trump, please ask them how they feel about any of the hundreds (thousands?) of offensive things Trump has said in the past two years, let alone in his lifetime."

One tweet read, " Robert De Niro introduced Bruce Springsteen's #TonyAwards performance w/ words that echoed the sentiment of the overwhelming majority of Americans: "I just want to say one thing - f*ck Trump! It's no longer down with Trump. It's f*ck Trump!" And he received a standing ovation."

One user tweeted, "Waiting 4 Trump's 100 mega-ton verbal punchback/tirade vs Robert DeNiro. DeNiro essentially destroyed Trump at the Tony award; Trump will call him a 2-bit hack actor w/ bad grammar, married to a rented younger actress. Anyone ever heard of the psychological term "PROJECTION"?"

"Robert DeNiro is forever a legend for this", posted a user along with a clip of the whole scene.

A user dared President Trump and wrote, "Well Robert DeNiro just told you what the majority of Americans & the world thinks of you. I dare you to tweet about him."

One user wrote, " Anyone criticizing Robert DeNiro's words should keep this in mind: When you elect a vulgar President, you can expect a vulgar response. #TonyAwards."

One concerned fan wrote, "I got so scared when I saw Robert DeNiro trending. But I'm glad to see he's well and remains a fucking legend."

The statement came when the actor came on stage to introduce Bruce Springsteen for a live performance. The statement was followed by a standing ovation from the crowd.

As for the introduction of Springsteen, De Niro said, "Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else".

Following which, the 68-year-old American singer-songwriter shook the audience with a soulful rendition of 'My Hometown'.
