Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has boosted his side to a 4-2 win over German team Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League Group A clash on Tuesday with his milestone 200th goal for the Old Trafford side.
Wearing a black headband to protect a facial injury he sustained last month, Rooney scored twice and made another goal as United boss David Moyes, who was overseeing his first continental game since succeeding Alex Ferguson as manager, made a memorable bow on the European stage at Old Trafford.
According to Sport24, Moyes' former Everton protegee gave United a 22nd-minute lead, sustained by his teammate Robin van Persie's fine volley, following which further goals from Rooney and Antonio Valencia completed the job.
Expressing his pleasure at achieving the milestone, Rooney said that he is pleased to score 200 goals for a club like United, adding that it is a great honour for him.
The report mentioned that with the win, United has managed to rediscover their scoring touch ahead of Sunday's trip to derby rivals Manchester City in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, although Leverkusen player Omer Toprak added a late goal, it was a chastening evening for the side as they must also contend with Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad in Group A, with Shakhtar winning 1-0 in San Sebastien, the report added.
