Superb centuries by skipper Eoin Morgan and Joe Root helped England smash its record for the highest run chase in one day internationals as they chased down New Zealand's target of 350 at Trent Bridge.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a total of 349-7 after Kane Williamson scored a free-flowing 90, with ample contributions from Martin Guptill and Grant Elliot with 53 and 55 respectively. Adil Rashid, the hero of the first match of the ongoing series, was hit out of the park as Mitchell Santner scored 28 runs off one over, the second highest ever conceded by an English bowler, reported the BBC.
At the break, New Zealand were looking strong favourites to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the ongoing series. However, England had other ideas.
Right from the start, the English batsmen took the game to the visitors, with Jason Roy and Alex Hales punishing the Kiwi bowlers with shots all over the ground. When the Black Caps finally had a breakthrough, the score was already 100 and things just went worse from there.
Root and Morgan came to the middle within a few balls of each other and took the score from 111-2 to 309, when, with the game virtually won, the English skipper departed for an 82-ball-113. Root stayed till the end, staying unbeaten at 106 as they trotted home with six overs to spare.
