Russia has appealed to the International Civil Aviation Organisation to open a new investigation into the last year's downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, the chief of the Russian aviation agency said, a day after the Dutch Safety Board released its final report.

According to News24, the final report said that the jet was destroyed by a Soviet-made Buk surface-to-air missile.

The report did not exclusively say who fired the missile but it recognised the area from where the launch must have taken place.

Flight MH17 crashed on July 17, 2014, while it was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board.
