Russia has lost contact with one of its crucial satellites just hours after it was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, local media reports say.

This was the second launch from the Vostochny spaceport. The first launch from Vostochny was carried out in April last year.

The Meteor M2-1 weather satellite had earlier failed to detach from the rocket this morning.

The satellite was launched in a bid to monitor weather and the climate on behalf of Russia's meteorological agency.

Further details are awaited.
