Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered thousands of troops to withdraw from the Ukrainian borders and return to their bases.

According to the BBC, Putin said that around 17,600 soldiers would be pulled back from the Rostov region.

The orders by the Russian President came following a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday.

The United States and NATO say that Russia had announced troop withdrawal earlier which was not actually carried out.

The conflict between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian separatists has killed at least 3,500 people since April.
