Russia has rejected Beatles legend, Sir Paul McCartney's plea to free jailed female punk band Pussy Riot.

McCartney, 70, had asked for Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23, to be given parole. They are serving two years for a protest show at a cathedral labelled "religious hatred and hooliganism", reports the Daily Star.

Last night Maria went on hunger strike after she was barred from her parole.

The mum-of-one was jailed last year in Prem alongside Nadezhda and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, who was later released on appeal.
