Russia's defence secretary claimed that there were no military personnel in its aid convoy for Ukraine, say United States officials.

According to the BBC, Russian defence minister Sergey Shoygu said in a statement to U.S. secretary of defense Chuck Hagel that the convoy was not being used to intervene further.

However, the convoy is still stalled at the border that aims to aid Eastern Ukrainian cities held under pro-Russian rebels.

Russia earlier denied claims by Ukraine that Russian armoured vehicles had crossed the border.

According to reports, the Pentagon said that Hagel had asked for clarifications regarding the convoy.
