Sabarimala ban on entry of women: SC reserves its order on transfer of case

ANI New Delhi [India]

The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its order on reffering the case challenging the ban on entry of women at the Sabarimala temple to a larger constitution bench.

The apex court is hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), filed by the India Young Lawyers' Association (IYLA), seeking entry of women in the Sabarimala temple in Kerala.

The PIL had challenged the ban on entry of women between the age group of 10-50 inside the ancient temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.

On November 7, 2016, the Kerala Government had told the Supreme Court that it was then ready to allow women inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, a prominent pilgrimage site among Hindu devotees in the state of Kerala.
