Congress leader B.K Hariprasad on Monday expressed concern over the loss of innocent lives in a railway accident in Bihar in which at least 35 people were killed, and said the safety and security of railway passengers should be given utmost importance, especially those who travel through Naxalite regions.

"It's a tragedy; we have to give more importance to railway safety and security. And, of late, in some of the states, like Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, the Naxalites are attacking trains. So, I think, there should be proper safety and security for passengers, especially who travel on this route," he told media in Bangalore.

Meanwhile, Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar explained how the tragedy took place when the Saharsa-Patna Rajrani Express ploughed into pilgrims at Dhamahra Ghat Railway Station on Monday morning.

"Passengers had come out because the train was passing and they knew that these two trains will remain at this station for quite some time. At this time, when they came out on the non-platform side, they got run over by this train that was running through," he said.

Earlier, at least 35 people were killed in Bihar's Khagaria District when the Saharsa-Patna Rajrani Express ploughed into pilgrims at Dhamahra Ghat Railway Station on Monday morning.

The victims, mostly pilgrims, were standing on the railway tracks at a station in Katyani Sthan, a religious stopover, waiting to board another train when the train hit them.

The injured people have been rushed to the nearby hospitals in Saharsa.

There is complete chaos at the accident site as agitating people were holding protest against railway officials in the station.

The agitated locals have torched the Rajrani train, which ran over atleast 35 people, at Dhamahra Ghat Railway Station.
