Reacting to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sakshi Maharaj's remark that he blames Muslims for the population boom in the country, the Congress Party on Sunday alleged that the statement is a continuation of politics of division that the saffron party has been pursuing for the last several years.
"Such statements are continuation of politics of division that BJP has been pursuing for last several years. These are very sensitive subjects and all political leaders must speak with reason and with circumspection on such issues so that society and country doesn't get divided further," Congress leader Ashwani Kumar told ANI.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh has sought a report from the district administration on the allegedly communal remarks that BJP MP from Unnao made at a religious event in Meerut on Friday.
Besides, the Meerut Police have lodged an FIR against the MP on charges of promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion and caste.
"There are problems in the country because of the growth of population. Hindus are not responsible for that. Those responsible are the ones who talk of four wives and 40 children," Maharaj said.
