The sales of electric vehicle have shown significant increase in the last quarter indicating that much lauded FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) programme is having a positive impact on the industry.
The electric vehicle industry witnessed 25 percent increase in sales at the end of the first quarter of the financial year 2015-16. The companies sold a total of 5000 (approx no. of EVs sold) e-vehicles, including two wheelers and four wheelers, in April to June this year as against 4000 (no. of EVs sold) in the previous quarter (January to March).
"We are really delighted that combined efforts of all the stakeholders are having a desirable impact and increased sales in one of the indications of this upbeat scenario," said Sohinder Gill, Director- Corporate Affairs, SMEV.
"We believe that one of the key reasons which triggered the rise in the sales was the subsidies announced by the government which benefitted the consumers directly. Our focus will now be on the technology roadmap and working on a strong charging infrastructure to support the growth trend," added Gill.
FAME India is the flagship scheme of Government of India under the aegis of the Department of Heavy Industries, which envisages early and large scale adoption of eco-friendly electric vehicle transportation platforms. Under the scheme, the Central Government would provide Rs. 795 crore financial assistance to electric vehicle manufacturers till 2020 towards creation of infrastructure and R&D facilities.
