Sam Smith's album 'In The Lonely Hour' has stopped Madonna from topping the UK album chart, denying her the 12th number one of her career.

The Brit singer's album sneaked ahead at the last minute after the 56-year-old singer's alum 'Rebel Heart' had grabbed the top spot throughout the week, the BBC reported.

Smith's album managed to achieve the feat after he received a boost after he performed his new single, 'Lay Me Down', with John Legend on Comic Relief show.

'Rebel Heart' is Madonna's thirteenth studio album, and features collaborations with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys and Avicii.

'Ed Sheeran's album 'x', Noel Gallagher's 'High Flying Birds - Chasing Yesterday' and George Ezra's 'Wanted on Voyage' grained the third, fourth and fifth spot respectively.
