Samajwadi party (SP) workers on Sunday damaged vehicles to protest against rise in prices of diesel and petrol in the country.
The state-owned oil companies hiked petrol prices by Rs. 2.35 per litre and diesel prices by 50 paise per litre on Saturday to meet the increase in cost of fuel imports.
The SP workers said that they were breaking the vehicles as they were of no use for them anymore considering the rise in the price of fuel.
"The Central government is increasing the diesel and petrol price continuously. This year the price of diesel and petrol have risen eight times. And this time the price has increased by 2.45 rupees, including tax. We are considering that these vehicles are of no use to us. The price of petrol in Kanpur is around 80 rupees. Diesel is increasing every month. And the fuel prices are likely to increase further," SP worker Ganesh Mishra said.
Meanwhile, another SP leader Kamal Uttam said that the Congress-led UPA Government had become inefficient and needed to be thrown out of power.
"We are protesting by breaking the scooters because of the rise of the diesel and petrol prices. The Central government has become absolutely useless and it should be thrown out," he said.
Oil companies on Saturday hiked the price of petrol by Rs. 2.35 per litre and diesel by 50 paise per litre.
This is the sixth hike in petrol prices in two months, whereas the prices of diesel have been hiked eight times since January 17.
