West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra, who was arrested earlier this month in connection with the Saradha chit-fund scam, has been sent to judicial custody till January 2, 2015.
The latest development in this regard took place after Mitra was produced in the Alipore Court today following which his bail plea was rejected.
"We had applied for bail to the Additional Judicial Magistrate. After the hearing, they have rejected the bail plea. Madan Mitra has been remanded to jail custody till January 2, 2015," said Vishwanath Chattopadhyay, a lawyer representing Mitra in this case.
"Medical assistance will be provided by the jail authority. We have applied for the medical assistance as Madan Mitra was sick. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate has granted the medical assistance order," he added.
He further alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was putting pressure on Madan Mitra and trying to procure his voice record.
Taking strong exception to Mitra's arrest, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier termed his arrest 'illegal and unconstitutional'.
Last Month, TMC MP Srinjoy Bose had been arrested by the CBI in connection with the scam.
