Saudi Arabia's King Salman has reportedly cut short his holiday on the French Riviera following a public uproar over the closure of a beach below his villa for security reasons.

According to the BBC, the Saudi monarch was originally scheduled to spend three weeks in France, but moved on to Morocco with his over 1000-strong entourage after only eight days.

The decision to move out was taken after over 100,000 people signed a petition against the closure of the public beach at Vallauris.

The Mirandole Beach lies directly below King Salman's private villa and French officials agreed to seal it off for the monarch's security.

Critics of the move said it was a breach of French laws on equality.
