The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the local bodies and the state governments to set up effluent treatment plants for industrial areas within six months in connection with a plea on industrial wastage and dumping issue.

The Apex Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar, also ordered to stop the supply of electricity to polluting industries that fail to set up an effluent treatment plant.

The court, earlier on Monday, asked the West Bengal Environment Secretary to appear before it for not filing a response on the issue.

Earlier, the top court had issued a notice to the Centre, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Chief Secretaries of 19 states on the plea filed by NGO Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti on the issue of water bodies' pollution, including ground water.
