The Supreme Court has criticised the centre and the states for showing sloppy in checking the female foeticide in the country.

A bench headed by the Justice Dipak Misra yesterday directed the Centre and all the state governments to give details of what action they have taken to implement the pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.

The bench said that the laws are not being implemented and everything is being left to fate.

The PNDT Act prohibits the pre-natal sex determination.

It asked the Centre to file an affidavit which shall clearly indicate what steps have been taken and what results have been achieved.

The bench also directed that health secretaries of states to file an affidavit within four weeks. It, however, granted six weeks time to Jammu and Kashmir in view of the recent floods in the state.

The apex court had in March last year directed the Centre and the state governments to take quick and tough action against people indulging in female foeticide.

It had also passed several directions for the effective implementation of the PNDT Act.
