The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay trial court proceedings in a defamation case filed by the Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal's advocate son Amit Sibal against former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders.

A bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and S A Bobde did not accept the submission of AAP leaders' counsel that till the disposal of the petition in the apex court, the court proceedings should be stayed.

The bench said it can only expedite the hearing of the matter in the apex court and posted it for July 22.

Amit Sibal had filed a defamation suit against Kejriwal and others for alleging that he had taken advantage of his father's position to represent telecom companies and the trial court had issued summons to them on July 24 last year.
