The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the central government and the Press Council of India on a plea for setting up an independent mechanism to regulate the content of television channels.

Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi sent notices to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Law and Justice Ministry to respond to the PIL that alleges that misleading and superstitious contents are being broadcast by channels, and that there is a need for a regulatory body to oversee it.
