The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the execution of Yakub Memon, the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, seeking responses from the Maharashtra Special Task Force and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on his petition against the death penalty.

According to reports, a three-judge bench stated that Memon's execution shall be stayed during the pendency of his review petition against the imposition of the death penalty. The bench fixed the matter for further hearing for January 28, 2015.

Memon, one of the accused in the series of blasts in Mumbai which killed 257 people, was sentenced to death in 2007 and is the lone death-row convict in the case.
