Security alert ahead of Republic Day, police detain 14 suspects

Security has been placed on high alert ahead of the Republic Day celebrations across the country.

Police in Manipur also confirmed the detention of fourteen suspects during a combing operation on Monday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Ibomcha Singh, said cordon and search operation was to ensure that there were no lapses in security arrangements for the Republic Day Function.

"So far, around 14 of them have been rounded up and they will be handed over to Singjamei Police Station, for further verification," said Singh

Police have been deployed in different areas of the district to prevent any untoward incident.

Every year, the Co-ordination Committee (CorCom) comprising of seven major armed groups of Manipur such as the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, National Liberation Front of TWIPRA (NLFT), Tripura People's Democratic Front (TPDF) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) have been boycotting the Republic Day Celebrations showing resistance against what they term as "Indian Occupation of the Region".

 

The Indian Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, completing the country's transition oward becoming an independent republic.
