Late Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi's elder son, M. K. Alagiri, on Saturday said that his rally on September 5 will be a threat to the DMK.

Alagiri, who was ousted from the party in 2014 by Karunanidhi recently hinted towards a battle for succession with his estranged brother M. K. Stalin.

When asked if his rally was going to be a threat for the DMK, Alagiri said, "Yes definitely, it will be a threat. I have never aspired for any post in the party ever, even when Karunanidhi was alive, I did not. Stalin is in a haste to claim the presidency."

On August 13, Alagiri had sparked rumours of a succession battle with Stalin at his father's memorial in Chennai's Marina Beach by saying that all his father's relatives were on his side and were supporting him.

"My father's true relatives are all are on my side. All the supporters in Tamil Nadu are on my side and are encouraging me only. Only time will give the answers; that is all I am willing to say now," Alagiri said.

Stalin, who is the working president of the DMK, is slated to succeed his late father, Karunanidhi on August 28, during a DMK general council meeting.

Karunanidhi passed away on August 7.
