World number one Serena Williams has suffered a shock exit from the Australian Open following her fourth-round defeat by Serbian ace Ana Ivanovic on Sunday at Melbourne Park.

A rampant Ivanovic came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 - which is her first ever victory over the five-time Australian Open champion, who had been tipped as favourite to complete the Grand Slam of all four major titles in 2014, in five attempts.

According to the BBC, the 14th-seeded Ivanovic, who is a former world number one and 2008 French Open champion, faces Eugenie Bouchard or Casey Dellacqua in the last eight.

Stating that she is thrilled at her victory, Ivanovic, who ended the match in an hour and 56 minutes, said that she just played the best she could, although she added that it is not easy playing against a champion like Williams.
