World number one Serena Williams has beaten Russian ace Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of the Sony Open on Thursday to reach the finals of the Miami hardcourt tournament for the ninth time in her career.

Extending her dominance over Sharapova, the American, who will be seeking a second straight Miami crown and the seventh of her career, beat the fifth-ranked Russian 6-4, 6-3 for a 15th straight time.

According to Sport24, Williams will now take on either Australian Open champion Li Na of China or Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova in the women's final of the combined WTA and ATP Masters event.

Williams leads her and Sharapova's careers head-to-head 16-2, and Sharapova's two victories in the rivalry came back in 2004, when her 17-year-old self beat Williams in the finals at Wimbledon and the WTA Championships, the report added.
