Serious trade imbalance exists between India and Uganda: VP Ansari

En-route from Kampala to Delhi, Vice President Hamid Ansari on Friday said that a significant trade imbalance exists between India and Uganda.

"The trade figures make it very evident that there is a serious trade imbalance. We export many things to them but their export basket is very limited," he said.

Offering possible solutions, Ansari said that either Uganda's export basket must be expanded or private investment must be directed from India towards Uganda.

"There are two solutions, one is that they increase the products in their export basket which are required in India and the other is that instead of exporting a lot of finished products from India to Uganda, some Indian manufacturers may think of making local investment so that the good is finished in Uganda and not in India," he added.

He deemed the visit as productive and said that it has reinforced the long standing ties between India and the two countries.
