At least seven persons were killed in a blast in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Sunday, local reports quoted officials, as saying.

The explosion happened in the vicinity of Lashkargah, the provincial capital, reports the Khaama Press.

The governor's spokesperson, Omar Zwak, was quoted as confirming that a civilian vehicle had struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants in the Bolan area of the city.

All persons belonged to a single family, including four children and two women.

Some reports suggest that at least 11 civilians were killed in the incident, but this figure is yet to be confirmed.

No one has claimed the responsibility for the blast so far.
