AICC general secretary Jitin Prasada on Saturday demanded a CBI probe into the murder case of Shahjahanpur-based journalist Jagendra Singh.

"This is where small people are being targeted. The CBI enquiry should be held. Whatever the truth is, must come out. The culprits, whoever and however big they are, must be punished and the strongest action should be taken for such a heinous crime that has happened, where the voice of free speech has been trampled upon," Prasada told ANI.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has suspended five policemen for their alleged role in the killing of the journalist.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik asked Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to take all necessary action in relation to the murder case.

Reportedly, Jagendra was set ablaze by state minister Rammurti Singh Verma's henchmen and some police officials on June 1. Singh succumbed to his burn injuries in a Lucknow hospital a week later.

Shahjahanpur Police earlier registered a criminal FIR against eight persons, including the minister, in connection with the case.

No arrests have, however, been made so far.
