Maria Sharapova produced a resilient performance on Sunday as she came from a set down to defeat her Spanish opponent Carla Suarez Navarro in a pulsating three set thriller to claim her third Italian Open title in Rome.

The Russian third seed overcame Suarez Navarro 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to bag her 35th career Women's Tennis Association title in the summit clash that lasted for a grueling two hours and 35 minutes, the BBC reported.

Although the Spaniard put on a strong display during the first two sets, she seemed to have run out of energy in the deciding set. Sharapova also climbed to the second spot in the WTA rankings following her semi-final 7-5, 6-3 win over Daria Gavrilova yesterday.
