Sharapova battles to beat Garbine Muguruza to reach French Open semifinals

Russian ace Maria Sharapova battled back from one game from defeat to beat Spain's Garbine Muguruza 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the French Open semi-finals.

The former world number one will now face Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, who defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5.

According to the BBC, Sharapova, who won the French Open title in 2012, had lost the first set to Muguruza, the the unseeded 20-year-old who beat Serena Williams in the second round, as the Spaniard broke three times to win the first set in 27 minutes and led 5-4 in the second.

However, Sharapova hauled her way back to victory as the seventh seed broke early in the third and saw off five break points in a 14-minute game at 2-1 before powering to the finish line, the report added.
